The exquisite green turf of Army Golf club wore a festive look as Bashundhara Cup Golf, the biggest amateur tournament of the country was officially inaugurated on Friday.
The turnout of the golfers was astonishing as 550 golfers across the country teed-off in the four categories of junior, ladies, regulars and veterans. The golf club officials were proud to reveal it as an unprecedented instance and at the same time were proud to mark the progress of golf.
Major General Abdul Matin, the senior vice president of the club officially inaugurated the meet. Lt. Col. (Rtd) Khandokar Abdul Wahed, the head of human resources Bashundhara Group, Brig. Gen, Monjur Kader, the chairman of the tournament committee and Lt. Col. (Rtd) Khabiruddin Ahmed, the CEO of Army Golf Club and M.A. Tayeb, the media adviser of Bashundhara Group were also present on the occasion.
The ticking sounds off the tee-offs, applauds of the viewers, the eagerness of the juniors about the seniors performances and the occasional screams of the elegant ladies made the environment a royal and pleasant one.
Maj. General Abdul Matin was in a buoyant mood. “The atmosphere is fantastic, more than 500 golfers in a tourney categorically indicates the expansion of golf, it is now a game of all people not only the well-offs, I thank Bashundhara Group for supporting Army Golf Club to host the tournament, we will try to enlarge our perspective with more activities” said Matin.
“We will try to arrange training for the upcoming golfers and also for the ladies to produce the future golfers” said the SVP of Army Golf club.
Meanwhile the organizers faced a hectic time to cope with the pressure of maintaining the overall records of the days play as 199 players among them 12 ladies teed-off to complete the nine-hole procedure. The overall results will be published today.
